The Aramaic behind this verse describes a specific kind of exhaustion and a specific kind of relief that the English translation has never fully carried.
Two words this reminds me of are acceptance and authenticity. We do not have to perform to be in Christ's family. We can be authentic, and we are accepted.

Thank you so much for this Nabu. I spent most of my life trying not to be gay and even married a woman and was faithfully with her for 21+ years. But trying to be what I am not made the marriage unsustainable. She used to say that she “felt like a non-person” however much I tried to love her. I eventually overcame my fear of being true to myself and learned that Jesus wants us to be authentic not spend our lives trying to be something we are not. So this verse speaks especially to me. Since we separated my wife went on to marry a robustly heterosexual man who has given her happiness; I walked her down the aisle and “gave her away to him”. God brought a wonderful young man into my life who loves me as I am. It has been as if God has “restored the years the locusts have eaten”! I expect you’ve written about that verse from Joel 2:25 also? Anyway at last I am now able to live in the good of that promise from Jesus in Matthew 11:28. Thanks again.
Well explained. Throughout scripture, God tells us that we “wear ourselves out” in pursuit of religious obligations and traditions that, in the end, offer us nothing. We pursue performative righteousness. We are self-creating according to our own imaginations. We work for food that does not satisfy. Jesus tells us that the work of God is singular and effective: BELIEVE in the One who was sent. If we will do that, we will have peace - shalom - and we will be transformed!
These accurate translations need to be shared far and wide to interrupt the chaos misinterpretation and misrepresentation continue to create… which all stems from the sense of the Words

I read the Lamsa translation of the bible a few decades ago - a native Aramaic speaker who re-translated it from the Aramaic. I wonder if you know of this book, and how it matches with your understanding. I love what you are doing here. It FEELS true, not just intellectually, but somatically. Interestingly, the word for "yoke" in Sanskrit is Yoga - a practice that is aligned with the true body, the true self. It is thought by some that Jesus spent his "missing years" in the East, studying with masters and being trained in esoteric arts. What are your thoughts?
